NEW DIRECTORS JOIN NHRU BOARD

Members of the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union (NHRU) have voted in a wealth of experience in three new business people who were elected to its Board of Directors during the 2018 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday night.

A large attendance at the 2018 AGM saw Meg Purser, Pat Slattery and Glenn Turner elected as new Directors of the NHRU. In addition, Barney Collins joins the Board as the Newcastle Rugby Union Referee Association’s (NRURA) delegate.

The meeting unanimously elected Bill Clifton for another term as President and Bob Brenton as Vice President. It also re-elected Stan McManus to the Board after expiry of an initial two-year term.

Bill Clifton said it was pleasing to see Meg, Pat, Glenn and Barney join the Board and that their business experience would be a benefit to Rugby Union in the Hunter.

“Meg manages her own corporate communication company in Newcastle and has extensive local business links. Pat is well known in business circles through Slattery Auctions and has wide connections at all levels of rugby,” said Bill.

“Glenn has a career spanning more than 30 years as a senior executive in the mining services, manufacturing, engineering and construction sectors in Australia and overseas. He was the Chairman of the former Hunter Region Sporting Venues Authority and is the former Chairman of the Hunter Medical Research Institute.”

“Barney is well respected among local rugby circles for his long and dedicated service as part of the NRURA. Barney is also well known throughout the Hunter as a Director of EJE Architecture.”

Meg, Pat, Glenn and Barney join current Directors Bill Clifton, Bob Brenton, Alan Harries, Stan McManus, Nicola Roche and Jason Wagstaffe on the Board for 2019.

The AGM also returned well-known local rugby identity, Ron Robson, as Patron of the NHRU for 2019.

Bill paid tribute to retiring Directors in Dan Gollan, Paul Ryan (Referees delegate) and Graham Cowan for their contribution to the NHRU during their tenures, especially to Graham who passed away in August.
In his President’s Report, Bill said the 2018 Season had been a year of strategic planning where the NHRU listened to and collaborated with all of its Hunter Rugby stakeholders.

“The NHRU Hunter Rugby Strategic Plan 2019-2021 is now complete and ready to be adopted and signed off at the first meeting of the newly elected 2019 NHRU Board in early January,” said Bill.

“The NHRU continues to be regarded as one of the best run Zones in the country and over the next few years we have much to do in “Building Rugby” and implementing the Hunter Rugby Strategic Plan.”

Full details of the strategic plan will be released after the new Board meets during January 2019.
