WARRINGAH WIN MEN’S STATE CROWN AT

NEWCASTLE 7s RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP

Warringah has won the inaugural NSW Waratahs Men’s Under 20 State 7s Rugby Championship played in Newcastle this weekend.

The Warringah team showed great attacking flair out wide to beat Parramatta Dark Blue by 39-12 in today’s competition at Newcastle’s No.2 Sportsground.

The final score represented a seven tries to two victory for Warringah who were one of the standout teams of the championships. Warringah led 22-0 at halftime and despite two quick tries by Parramatta after half time were too good for their opponents throughout the match.

In other results, NSW Baa Baas won the Plate Final by beating Gordon 31-7. West Harbour were 43-7 victors over Central North to win the Bowl Final while the Shield Final went to Far North Coast when they narrowly defeated Parramatta Light Blue 22-19.

Newcastle hosted both the NSW Waratahs Men’s Under 20 State 7s Championship and the NSW Waratahs Women’s Open State 7s Championship over the weekend. The two-day championships were  organised by NSW Rugby in conjunction with Newcastle Hunter Rugby Union (NHRU) and The Hawthorne Club, which supports rugby development in the Hunter Region.

The women’s competition, conducted on a round-robin pointscore basis, was won by Waverley (Sydney) in defeating the Newcastle-based Hunter team 31-7.

Macquarie University took third place when they defeated Far North Coast 26-12.

Chairman of the Newcastle 7s organising committee,  Mark Queenan, said the championships had been a success with good feedback from teams.

He said the NHRU and The Hawthorne Club planned to make the championships an annual event in Newcastle and that much had been learnt from the inaugural running of the tournament over two days.

“Feedback from the teams and volunteers during Saturday and Sunday has been very good and  we have a strong platform for running a similar championships in 2017,” said Mark.

“Congratulations go to Warringah and Waverley on winning their respective championships – they certainly deserved their titles but the main outcome was that we have been able to organise an entertaining Rugby 7s carnival in Newcastle.

“NSW Rugby have run a very efficient and professional tournament based on their organising and Rugby experience while we could not have been as successful without the broadband of volunteers who helped in a variety of tasks over the two days.

“Our plan is to attract more teams to the Hunter Region next year and make the Newcastle 7s one of the major carnivals on the Australian Rugby 7s calendar.”
