WAVERLEY WINS NEWCASTLE 7s WOMEN’S RUGBY TOURNAMENT

A team of talented young Waverley players has won the inaugural NSW Waratahs Women’s Open State 7s Rugby Championship played in Newcastle.

 

The Waverley team showed great attacking flair to outplay their Hunter Region opponents and win the competition late today (Saturday) at Newcastle’s No.2 Sportsground.

 

Waverley scored five tries to one in their 31-7 victory over Hunter after leading 19-7 at halftime. Third place went to Macquarie University who beat Far North Coast 26-12.

 

The NSW Waratahs Men’s Under 20 State 7s Championship and the NSW Waratahs Women’s Open State 7s Championship are both being played in Newcastle this weekend.

 

The championships are being organised by NSW Rugby in conjunction with Newcastle Hunter Rugby Union (NHRU) and The Hawthorne Club, which supports rugby development in the Hunter Region.

 

The women’s competition was conducted today on a round-robin pointscore basis while the men’s championship continues tomorrow. Matches start at 9am with the men’s finals being played from 12.20pm. The Cup Final will kick-off at 1.20pm.

 

Gates open at 8:00am tomorrow (Sunday). Entry fee is $10 per adult (per day), $8 concession (students and pensioners) while children Under 16 will be admitted free of charge.

 

A ‘family zone’ with a jumping castle, face painting and other activities will operate throughout the weekend. Canteen, bar and barbecue facilities will also be available.
